“Where are we going?” Mia has a scared expression on her face.

“Don’t worry, it’s a surprise.” I can’t contain my excitement. Not because I want to show off, but because finally I get to share a part of my world with her.

She follows me to the waiting car and I tell the driver to take us to the harbor. If we get there in time, we can see the sun rise over the bay. The car pulls up at the dock. There’s no one else around at this time of the night, just the seagulls fighting over the fishy remains of the day.

Mia steps out the passenger side and almost bumps into me while staring at our next mode of transport.

“What is it?” she gasps.

I help her up the steps leading to a white, gleaming vessel and we hop on board. “This is my baby, the Lady Grace, a solar-powered yacht.”

She takes in her surroundings, her eyes glazing over. “This is a yacht?”

“A superyacht, to be exact,” I add.

One of the uniformed staff offers us glasses of champagne and Mia takes hers without saying anything. She’s still in awe.

“And we’re leaving the dock on this superyacht?” she asks and takes a big gulp from her glass.

“Yes,” I slowly say.

The captain walks up to us and greets Mia. “Welcome aboard the Lady Grace. Hopefully, you’ll enjoy the experience.”

Mia gingerly takes his hand and says, “Thanks for having me.”

Captain James nods at me and continues on his way to the bridge.

“We should reach our destination in a few hours.” I take her hand and lead her to the observation deck.

She stops. “Wait? What? I can’t just run off. I don’t even know where we’re going,” she argues, panic straining her voice.

“It’s Saturday, you’ve got the entire weekend to relax and enjoy yourself.” I assure her as we reach the top of the stairs.

Before us, the calm Hudson River stretches as far as we can see. It’s so peaceful and quiet, it’s hard to believe we’re in one of the noisiest cities in the world.

“Wow!” Mia stands next to me and fixes her sight on the spot where the water meets the sky. “It’s beautiful.”

The yacht lurches to life and the captain eases us out of the harbor, like butter gliding on a knife.

Startled, Mia hits my arm. “Wait, I didn’t agree to this. It’s the regionals workshop on Monday. I can’t miss it.”

I gently hold onto her shoulders and say, “I promise I’ll have you back by tomorrow night.”

“I don’t even have a change of clothes,” she stammers and starts hyperventilating.

Taking her to the nearest sofa, I sit her down and look her in the eye. “Hey, everything’s going to be fine. I brought you an overnight bag and your toothbrush.”

Confused, Mia asks, “How did you know I was going to say yes?”

I scratch my chin. “I didn't, just took a chance.”

“And what if I said no,” she asks, clearly not impressed with my bravado.

I shrug and respond with a meek, “Then I would have been fucked.
